Privacy Policy
dynamical.org publishes a public catalog of cloud-optimized weather and climate datasets. The catalog, documentation, and data are open and free to access. You can browse the site and read the catalog without an account, without logging in, and without us collecting personal information about you beyond the minimal, standard data described below.
What we collect
- Browsing the site: no account or login is required, and we set no advertising or cross-site tracking cookies. Our web host (Cloudflare) processes standard request metadata - such as your IP address and browser user-agent - to serve and protect the site, as described in Cloudflare's own privacy policy.
-
Analytics and error monitoring: on the production site
(
dynamical.org) we use BetterStack to record aggregate page-view telemetry and JavaScript error reports. This helps us understand which pages are useful and catch broken pages. It may include the page URL, referrer, approximate location, and browser/device details. We do not use it to build advertising profiles. - Newsletter: if you subscribe via the sign-up form, we collect your email address to send occasional updates. Subscriptions are handled by Buttondown, and you can unsubscribe at any time using the link in any email.
- Experimental features (GitHub sign-in): some experimental features may let you sign in with GitHub via OAuth. If you choose to do so, we receive basic GitHub profile information (such as your username and email) solely to authenticate you and enable that feature. We do not post on your behalf or access your private repositories, and you can revoke access at any time in your GitHub settings.
- Local storage: the site uses your browser's local storage to remember interface preferences - for example, that you have dismissed a "latest content" notification. This stays in your browser and is not sent to us.
- Contacting us: if you email us, we keep your message and contact details to respond and follow up.
How we use it
We use this data only to operate, secure, and improve dynamical.org and its services, to send updates you have asked for, and to respond to you. We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it except with the service providers below who process it on our behalf, or where required by law.
Service providers
We rely on a small number of third parties to run the site, each with its own privacy practices: Cloudflare (hosting and CDN), BetterStack (analytics and error monitoring), Buttondown (newsletter email), and GitHub (sign-in for experimental features). Dataset files are stored on cloud object storage (such as Amazon S3 and Cloudflare R2).
Data retention and your choices
We keep personal data only as long as needed for the purposes above. You can unsubscribe from the newsletter at any time, clear your browser's local storage, and revoke GitHub access from your GitHub account. To ask what data we hold about you or to request deletion, contact us at the address below.
Changes
We may update this policy as the site evolves. Material changes will be reflected here with a new "last updated" date.
